Automattic Inc, the parent organization of WordPress.com, is collaborating with other news industry leaders to develop an advanced open-source publishing platform. The announcement has come via an official press release by WordPress on January 14.

The new product christened as ‘Newspack’ that is to be developed by WordPress is expected to be a revenue-generating and profit-making media enterprise.

Kinsey Wilson, President of WordPress.com, posted on Twitter that WordPress is inviting local news organizations to build a more sustainable platform for digital news.

Google News Initiative is backing the project with $1.2 million; other investors include ConsenSys, the venture studio supporting Civil Media, which is contributing $350,000 and the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, which is contributing $400,000.

ConsenSys also posted on its Twitter account that it is partnering with Google and others to back the WordPress new product.

Several news startups attempt with the complexities of technology selection, development, support, hosting, and security. It can be a hindrance to effective revenue generation.

The blog mentions –

“many local news organizations struggling to find sustainable models for journalism, we’re seeing a need for an inexpensive platform that provides the technology and support that lets news organizations build their businesses and focus on what they do best — providing critical reporting for their communities.”

Further the blog notes on the new product that, “Our hope with Newspack is to give them a platform where they can continue to focus on what they do best, while we focus on providing world-class technology and support across their editorial and business operations.”

Recently, ConsenSys entered into a partnership with semiconductor manufacturer AMD, to develop a ‘blockchain-based cloud computing infrastructure.’

Jim Brady, CEO of Spirited Media, said partnering with Automattic in its new product would help build a sustainable model in the journalism industry. Brady has also led large digital news operations including Washingtonpost.

Newspack is aiming to provide for world-class technology to promote news organizations in its editorial and business operations.
