Fortnite gamers can now pay for merchandise using Monero, as it “exclusively” starts accepting the cryptocurrency as a payment option, tweeted Monero on Jan.1.
Developed by Epic Games in July 2017, Fortnite is perhaps the most popular of online video games available at present. Although there were no official announcements from Fortnite, fans sharing the news on Reddit and Monero developer Riccardo Spagni sharing it on Twitter, received some positive response from the gamers.
Soon after Riccardo’s tweet, CCN journalist Samantha Chang asked why the processor is not accepting Bitcoin. Riccardo replied by saying that Globee at the moment is only taking Lightning Network transactions, also citing “lack of privacy” for not accepting Bitcoins.
Lightning Network is a scaling solution for Bitcoins that enable the digital currency to process millions of transactions with the help of a second layer solution. The payments can be refined off-chain and then be transmitted to the network.
Fortnite’s merchandise store Retail Row, supports crypto payment processor GloBee, allowing retailers to accept cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Dogecoin (DOGE) and Decred (DCR). Currently, the only crypto the store supports is Monero (XMR). Store’s customers can also make payments with other options like Paypal and credit cards.
A survey conducted by Market Watch in November 2018, revealed that American teens playing Fortnite, prefer to receive cryptocurrencies and V-Bucks (in-game currency) over cash, gift cards or other gifts.
Cryptocurrencies like Monero and Zcash are crypto users top choice, as they offer a high level of anonymity for both users and their transactions. However, the US government is working on tracking these digital currencies via a blockchain-enabled forensic analytics program. These efforts by the US government are to eliminate money laundering, terror financing, and tax evasion.
Few are doubtful on how video games can impact society, whereas the crypto-enthusiasts believe that this form of entertainment is decisive in cryptocurrency’s use across the world.
