EnCirca announced on 18 July that it is the first ICANN Accredited Registrar accepting applications for Ethereum’s .ETH domain names.
EnCirca informed that Ethereum is the world’s second-largest blockchain, ETH address was created to map human-readable domain names to blockchain wallets. EnCirca sustained that such a provision would facilitate ease of use. EnCirca quoted a precedent noting Facebook’s recent announcement of Libra. EnCirca emphasized that with such singular developments, it was evident that blockchain and cryptocurrencies were fast gaining traction.

“Billions of internet users will soon have blockchain wallets for sending and receiving crypto-currencies. In response, EnCirca has made it easy for brand owners to protect their trademarks on the blockchain.”
EnCirca further added that blockchain domain names were not regulated like .COM or .ORG. The registrar firm indicated that as a result of lack of regulation, the traditional prevalent protection mechanisms to prevent hijacking of brand names are unfortunately missing. EnCirca in a bid to offer a word of caution noted that brand owners were advised to proactively protect their trademarks in the .ETH top-level domain.
EnCirca conveyed clarity on the naming process, informing the Ethereum Naming Service has two different naming processes. The firm clarified that such a distinction was based on the length of the desired domain name. Broadly classified as Short Character .ETH and Long Character.ETH Domain names, the two offerings feature unique attributes. EnCirca informed that short names were expected to be in high demand whereas long names would be provided on the first-come-first-serve basis.
EnCirca shared the portal where it was accepting applications for both short character and long character .ETH domain names. EnCirca would also be hosting a free web-based seminar to provide an overview of blockchain domain names while answering questions from brand owners and trademark lawyers.
