Bitmain heralds a new mining chip

Bitmain made an announcement in their blog on February 18, highlighting a next-generation 7nm ASIC chip for SHA256 mining, poised to deliver breakthrough energy efficiency.

Bitmain headlined that the new BM1397 chip combines new chip design processes and world-leading 7nm semiconductor manufacturing process. This would enable faster and cheaper mining for cryptocurrencies that use the SHA256 algorithm for their Proof of Work (PoW) consensus.

The chip would mostly come in handy for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Bitmain declared in the blog, the chip brings in an era which promises ‘feats in performance, chip area, and energy efficiency.’

Speaking on the technicalities, the new BM1397 chip requires lower power and can offer an energy consumption to computing ratio as minimal as 30J/TH. In simple jargon, this is a 28.6 percent improvement in power efficiency when compared to Bitmain’s previous 7nm chip, the BM1391.

In order to achieve this feat, Bitmain’s engineering team has inordinately customized chip design to optimize its architecture, circuit and economics. The chip is made using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 7nm FinFET process.

The BM1397 is proof of the fact of Bitmain’s dominance in chip design methodology and deep understanding of the most advanced semiconductor fabrication technologies. The announcement backs Bitmain’s continued support to the development of high-performance computing chips. This also strengthens their vision for a better crypto ecosystem.

Bitmain emphatically quoted –

“Today’s announcement follows Bitmain’s on-going commitment to the development of high-performance computing chips and is a part of its aim to help advance the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Bitmain’s innovations enable anyone, anywhere to mine and benefit from cryptocurrencies.”

The BM1397, part of Bitmain’s growing chip lineup, is designed to bring a better mining experience and envisions to set a new trend in ASIC chip technology.

Regarding integration, the BM1397 chip will feature in new Antminer models the T17 and S17 that will be announced by Bitmain at a later date. Antminer is a full-fledged mining machine by Bitmain.

Bitmain concluded on a biographical note stating that the firm transforms computing by building industry-first technology in cryptocurrency, the blockchain, and artificial intelligence.

Blockchain technology needs a healthy amalgamation of software and hardware for greater developments. Cutting-edge innovations will foster better acceptance of decentralized applications.
